Gov. Paterson Taps New Chair for DASNY

New York Gov. David Paterson yesterday nominated a new chairman to the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, the second largest issuer of bonds in the country. Paterson picked Alfonso L. Carney Jr. to replace Gail Gordon, who has served as chairwoman for 11 of the 14 years she’s been on the board.

“I want to thank Ms. Gordon for her 14 years of service as a board member of the Dormitory Authority, including her nearly 11 years as chair,” Paterson said in a press release. “She has led the authority with great commitment and distinction and I wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavors. I am confident that Alfonso Carney will continue the tradition of sound leadership.”

The nomination requires Senate confirmation.

Carney is a principal of Rockwood Partners LLC, a medical and legal consulting firm and served as acting chief operating officer and corporate secretary for the Goldman Sachs Foundation in New York, which awards educational grants.

Carney worked for Altria Corporate Services Inc. for 15 years, including as vice president and associate general counsel for corporate affairs from 1998 to 2005. Prior to joining Altria in 1990, formerly Philip Morris & Co., Carney served as senior international counsel for Kraft Foods Inc.

He earned his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1974 and began his legal career at General Foods Corp. in 1975. Carney graduated from Trinity College with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy.
