Kansas’ budget shortfall for fiscal 2009, which had been estimated at $141.2 million in early November, has grown to at least $186 million, the state Legislative Research Department told lawmakers last week.
Pat Conroy, director of the department, said revenue in November and December was $44.6 million less than expected. He said he does not expect a turnaround in collections for at least 18 to 24 months.
The Legislature that convened yesterday will also have to deal with a projected shortfall in fiscal 2010 of $1 billion.
Rep. Jim Ward, D-Wichita, said lawmakers may consider delaying some approved tax reductions that have not yet been fully implemented.
