$25M for Jenny's New Digs

The Dallas City Council has approved the use of $25 million of bond funds approved by voters in 2006 to build a new $30 million, 11-acre African Savanna exhibit at the Dallas Zoo. Financing also includes $5 million from a private foundation.

The city accelerated work on the elephant exhibit last year when it was criticized for planning to move Jenny, an elderly African elephant, to a nature park in Mexico.

In addition to the elephants, the project will house lions, zebras, giraffes, wild dogs, and warthogs.

About six acres will be dedicated to the four elephants that the zoo plans to have when the exhibit opens in spring 2010.
