SEIU Voting on Givebacks

Members of the SEIU Nevada union employed by Clark County are voting today on a deal in which they give back most of a previously approved pay hike to mitigate budget cuts.

The agreement would reduce previously agreed cost-of-living wage adjustments to 1% from 3%, and cap merit increases at 1%. If ratified, it affects Service Employees International Union members employed by Clark County, the nation’s 15th most populous, and the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.

“The primary focus throughout discussions was sustaining jobs and maintaining the vital services Clark County and UMC employees provide for our community,” Al Martinez, president of SEIU Nevada, said in a Monday news release.

“The significance of this agreement cannot be overstated,” County Commission chairman Rory Reid said in the release. “We went to our employees and asked them to be our partners and help us get through this difficult time. They have an existing contract and are under no obligation to change the terms, but these are extraordinary times for all of us.”
