Ballpark Design: Thumbs-Up

The Tulsa Stadium Trust last week approved the exterior design of the city’s new downtown ballpark, which is being financed in part with proceeds from $25 million of general obligation bonds supported by an annual assessment on property within the surrounding stadium district.

The stadium, which will be known as ONEOK Field, is expected to cost $39.2 million. The entire complex has a price tag of $60 million.

Financing will include the $25 million of bond proceeds, $5 million from the stadium lease with the Tulsa Drillers, a Class AA baseball team in the Texas League, and $30 million in private contributions.

Construction on the stadium is to be completed by the beginning of the 2010 baseball season.

The exterior will feature three medallions to memorialize an early 20th century race riot that occurred in the stadium district. The designs of the markers have not been decided, but officials said the three themes will be hope, unity, and peace.
