University Projects Get Aid

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle announced Monday the inclusion in his new capital budget of $240 million of debt for University of Wisconsin projects in Milwaukee.

The state would provide the assistance over six years. The debt proceeds would go toward the university’s Milwaukee campus for building projects aimed at advancing engineering, science,  and health.

Doyle said the aid would help promote economic development and spur job growth. “Our universities have always been the engines that drive Wisconsin,” he said.

The Great Lakes Research Facility is one project in line for funding. The university wants to renovate the existing facility and build an addition to it for the new School of Freshwater Science.

The State Building Commission is scheduled this week to begin considering the capital budget with a final vote scheduled for March 30. The final version adopted by the commission will be forwarded to the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee for consideration as an amendment to the proposed two-year operating budget recently unveiled by Doyle.
