Tax Reform Panel to Delay Report

A blue-ribbon panel charged with delivering recommendations on reforming California’s tax system is likely to delay the release of its report.

The Commission on the 21st Century Economy, created by an executive order of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, is charged with reviewing the state’s revenue system and recommending changes to bring it up to date. It is looking at suggestions such as broadening the sales tax base to include services.

The commission was due to issue its report April 15.

Because of the statewide special election May 19 that includes budget reform and lottery bond measures, commissioners voted Tuesday to recommend an extension, probably until summertime.

Such an action would require an updated executive order from the governor.
