Factory Orders Slip 1.9%; Ex-Transportation Off 0.9%

New factory orders for manufactured goods slumped 1.9% in January, the Commerce Department said yesterday.

The factory order decrease, to $351.926 billion, was smaller than the 3.5% decrease projected by Thomson Reuters and

came after a revised 4.9% drop to $358.811 billion in December, originally reported as a 3.9% decline to $362.437 billion.

Excluding transportation, the level of new manufacturing orders fell 0.9%

to about $313.3 billion in January, following a 5.4% drop in December to $316.2 billion, originally seen as a 4.4% slide to $319.4 billion.

Excluding military orders, new orders slid 0.5% to $341.5 billion, following a 6.3% decrease to $343.1 billion in December, originally reported as a 5.0% drop to $347.7 billion.
