Comal County commissioners last week set a May election on $36 million of general obligation bonds to build a new justice center in New Braunfels after residents stopped a plan to issue certificates of obligation for the facility.
Commissioners voted 4 to 1 in November to issue the certificates, which would not require voter approval. Opponents used a 30-day challenge period to obtain more than 6,500 signatures on petitions seeking the election.
The county clerk certified that the required 3,325 valid signatures had been collected to force the bond election on May 8.
The total price of the proposed four-story facility, which would include six courtrooms, is about $38 million.
Comal County's debt is rated Aa3 by Moody's Investors Service.
