NLC Picks Loveridge as President

Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge was elected president of the National League of Cities Saturday.

Loveridge was first elected mayor of Riverside in 1994. He had been first vice president of the league.

The NLC president, who serves a one-year term, acts as a spokesperson for cities, and leads the board of directors in shaping NLC priorities.

The league describes itself as a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages across the nation. It has been advocating creation of a new issuer-run mutual bond insurance company to fill the gap caused by the effective collapse of most of the bond insurance industry.

“Now is the time for city officials, all of us, to lead recovery and growth in our communities,” Loveridge said in his acceptance speech. “It is NLC’s time to ask Washington to stay focused on partnering with us to help our economy and our local budgets get back on track and to create good jobs.”
