Snowballing Shortfalls Seen

Commissioner of Administration Angèle Davis told the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday that Louisiana expects a revenue shortfall of almost $1 billion in fiscal 2011 and almost $2 billion in fiscal 2012.

“Given the shortfalls state government is facing, the question isn’t if we cut spending,” she said. “The question is how.”

Davis, who is Gov. Bobby Jindal’s chief budget officer, must submit a proposed budget for fiscal 2011 to the Legislature by Feb. 12. Davis said the budget will incorporate recommendations from a number of panels that are considering cost-cutting ideas for state government.
