Brewer Wants Fast Relief

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said last week that any new source of revenue to stem the state’s estimated $2 billion budget deficit in fiscal 2010 must be quick, simple, and effective.

“It needs to generate revenues immediately,” Brewer said at the annual Arizona Town Hall conference in Grand Canyon. “The crisis is upon us now.”

Brewer said she would oppose a budget solution that relies heavily on new or increased taxes to avoid a deficit.

“Proposals that increase taxes to avoid any substantial budget cuts may sound good to some, but they are unrealistic,” she said. “I support — and I believe the public wants — a balanced approach of budget cuts and a modest, temporary tax increase.”
