Sales Tax Amnesty Set

New Orleans hopes to generate at least $5 million in revenue from businesses with a sales tax amnesty program that will begin Oct. 1 and extend through Dec. 4.

Business owners behind in their sales taxes will get a 50% cut in their interest they owe by participating in the program. Those who do not take advantage of the amnesty can expect aggressive collection measures, the city said, including liens and seizures of property.

The city said approximately 3,000 businesses in New Orleans are behind in their payments.

The amnesty program also includes taxes on hotel rooms, alcoholic beverages, and occupational licenses.
