Jobless Claims Fall 26,000 To 550,000 in Sept. 5 Week

WASHINGTON — Initial jobless claims fell to 550,000, a number lower than economists’ estimates, for the week ending Sept. 5 from an upwardly revised 576,000 claims in the previous week, the Labor Department reported yesterday.

Continuing jobless claims fell to 6.088 million from 6.234 million for the week ending Aug. 29. Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected jobless claims to fall to 560,000, according to the median estimate.

The four-week moving average for initial claims for the week ending Sept. 5 decreased to 570,000 from 572,750, and the four-week average for continuing claims fell to 6.183 million from 6.220 million for the week ending Aug. 29.
