Resort Tax Collections Fall

Orange County Comptroller Martha Haynie on Monday announced that resort tax collections in June were $12.3 million, making it the 12th month tax receipts on hotels and motels have declined in a region where Florida’s mega-theme parks are located.

Haynie said that June 2009 collections were 16% lower than in June 2008. “This month marks a full year of continuous monthly declines,” she said in a release.

Based on a 12-month decline through June, collections from the 6% resort tax were down $21.4 million compared to the previous year.

In response, county commissioners in January reduced tourist tax spending by $18.8 million, or 10.5%, Haynie said.
