Topeka Sets Levy Limits

The Topeka City Council last week voted to limit any increase in the combined property tax levy for fiscal 2010 for the city and the Topeka Metropolitan Transit Authority to no more than 3.7 mills.

The levy would raise taxes on a $100,000 home by $42.55 a year. The current property tax rate is 32.68 mills.

The agreement allows the city to increase its rate by no more than 1.85 mills and provided for a similar hike by the transit agency. The 3 mill levy for the system has been in place since 1994.

However, the final budget may not require the full increase. The council is set to adopt the fiscal 2010 budget Aug. 18.
