Joblessness Rises to 7.1%

Unemployment in Texas rose to 7.1% in May, up from 6.6% in April but still lower than the U.S. average for May of 9.4%.

The Texas Workforce Commission said non-agricultural employment fell by 24,700 jobs in May, contributing to the 222,600 jobs lost in the state over the past 12 months.

The manufacturing sector lost 12,800 jobs in May, followed by construction with a loss of 10,400 jobs.

Lubbock reported the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 4.6%, ­followed by Amarillo with 4.7%.
