Anchorage Schools Eye GOs

The Anchorage School District Board put a $97 million general obligation bond referendum on the ballot for April, the Anchorage Daily News reported this week.

The district split the request into two parts: $68.9 million for addition, renewal, and design projects, including renovation of a high school, design of a new elementary school, and renovation of a high school water and sewer system; and $27.5 million for building system renewal projects, including sprinkler, roof replacement, traffic safety, security, and mechanical systems.

If voters approve the bonds, the state of Alaska will reimburse 60% to 70% of the costs, the local paper said. Since 1993, Anchorage voters have approved $1.1 billion of school construction and renovation bonds for the district, with the state picking up about half of the cost through its matching funds.

The Anchorage School District serves 50,000 students in Alaska’s biggest city. The district says it has a backlog of $720 million of unmet capital needs.
