Jobless Claims Up 54,000 To 524,000 in Jan. 10 Week

WASHINGTON — Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose an adjusted 54,000 to 524,000 in the Jan. 10 week, as the tally for both initial claims and continuing claims reverted closer to the four-week moving average after some holiday-week skewing, a Labor Department analyst said yesterday.

The latest total exceeded the expected 501,000 level and follows two weeks of declines in holiday week schedules.

Continuing claims for the Jan. 3 week declined 115,000 to 4,497,000 after seasonal adjustment. Before adjustment actual continuing claims were up 515,294 to 5,832,746.
