Airport Land-Buy in Austin

Austin plans to spend $30 million on land around Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to create industrial and commercial developments, officials said.

The city will use grants from the Federal Aviation Administration designed to create buffers around municipal airports to finance about 80% of the acquisition cost. After housing is demolished, the city will sell parcels to developers for industrial and commercial projects.

Sixty-five parcels on 200 acres that currently have small homes, churches, and small stores will be acquired near the airport in the southeast section of the city at the former site of Bergstrom Air Force Base.

While the land has been declared too noisy for residential use, the site is appropriate for business and commercial uses, officials said.
