Perdue Enacts Water Bill

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue last week signed SB 342, known as the Water Conservation and Drought Relief Act of 2008.

The bill establishes procedures for the state to assist local governments building reservoirs and authorizes projects to be financed with bonds.

“After facing one of the worst droughts in our state’s history, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure an adequate water supply that meets future needs,” Perdue said in a statement concerning the bill signing.

The act creates the Water Supply Division to assist in building reservoirs. The Legislature appropriated $40 million for initial funding, with another $30 million to be made available for loans to local governments.
