U.S. Posts $159.3B Surplus in April

The federal government posted a $159.3 billion surplus in April, according to Treasury Department figures released yesterday.

The surplus followed a March deficit of $48.1 billion. In April 2007, the federal government posted a $177.7 billion surplus. For the fiscal year to date, the government is running a $152.188 billion deficit, compared to an $80.754 billion shortage at this point last year.

IFR Markets predicted a $160.0 billion surplus.
