WASHINGTON - President Bush plans to nominate Washington University Law School professor Troy Paredes to the Securities and Exchange Commission to replace Paul Atkins, a Republican commissioner who announced Monday that he intends to step down once his successor is appointed.
Parades' likely appointment was first reported yesterday by Dow Jones Newswires, which cited a "senior administration official."
Paredes is co-author of a leading multi-volume securities regulation textbook along with University of Rochester president Joel Seligman and the late Louis Loss, a Harvard Law School professor. He also has written published articles on such subjects as hedge funds and corporate governance and takeovers.
Before joining Washington University's faculty, Paredes was a corporate and regulatory lawyer. As an attorney, he worked on a variety of transactions, including leveraged buyouts, mergers and acquisitions, and private equity and other financings, as well as on regulatory matters in the electric industry. Parades graduated in 1992 with an economics degree from the University of California at Berkeley before graduating from Yale Law School in 1996.
