Sonics Backed Tax Hike

The owners of the National Basketball Association’s Seattle SuperSonics provided the largest single contribution to the successful effort to extend an Oklahoma City sales tax for 15 months to finance improvements to the city-owned Ford Center to make it a suitable home for the team.

Professional Basketball Club LLC donated $385,000 to the Big League City campaign that supported the extension of the 1% sales tax to finance $100 million of improvements to Ford Center and build a $20 million practice facility.

Other donations include $268,000 from the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. Cox Communications contributed a $61,000 trade-out donation, and Integris Health donated $20,000.

The pro-tax group spent $843,007 in the campaign, with $529,000 going for television, print, and radio advertising. Voters approved the tax extension on March 4.
