Infrastructure Aid Tallied

Louisiana has received $6.4 billion of the $10 billion of financial aid distributed by the federal government to Gulf Coast state and local governments for the repair and replacement of public infrastructure damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

“This is an unprecedented funding level in our nation’s history of responding to natural disasters,” said Jim Stark, acting associate deputy administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Gulf Coast Recovery Office.

Mississippi has received more than $2.6 billion, Texas $925 million, and Alabama $115 million, FEMA said. The agency said it has funded more than 74,500 public works projects in the four states over the past 30 months.

FEMA’s public assistance program reimburses state and local governments for funds expended to repair or replace roads and bridges, water control facilities, public building, publicly owned utilities, and parks and recreation areas.
