Keller ISD Weighs Bond Vote

Keller Independent School District north of Fort Worth could seek voter approval for another bond issue in November to handle growth in intermediate and middle schools, district officials say.

The bond issue’s size has not been determined, but a committee of district employees, parents, and community members will begin meeting in the spring to map out the needs. District officials must also decide whether to add one or two elementary schools and an athletic stadium in addition to the intermediate and middle schools. The district’s three high schools now share one stadium, and a fourth high school will open in August 2009.

The new bond package would be the district’s third in less than four years. Voters approved $142.5 million to build schools and renovate the district’s athletic stadium in November 2006.

Keller ISD has gained about 2,000 students each year in recent years for an enrollment of about 29,500 students. With the housing slump, growth has slowed to about 1,500 new students per year, and the district expects to top out with 36,000 to 38,000 students in about 10 years.
