Gregoire Seeks More Savings

With budget proposals complete from the Democrats who control both the Washington House and Senate, Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire suggested that more savings need to be found.

The supplemental budget proposals are revisions to the two-year budget adopted in 2007.

“While the state’s economy remains strong, it is not immune to slowing national economic trends. With that in mind, I think we must leave a healthier surplus than proposed by both the Senate and the House,” Gregoire said in a news release Wednesday. “With proposals from both the House and the Senate now on the table, we can begin work on finding common ground and narrowing our differences.”

Minority Republicans criticized the Democrats’ plans.

“It is time for Olympia’s uncontrollable appetite for spending taxpayers’ money to stop,” Rep. Jim Dunn, R-Vancouver, said in a statement.
