State Jobless Rates Rose in Nov., BLS Says

The District of Columbia and 37 states saw unemployment rates rise in November, while five states improved and eight were steady, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

For the year, as the national unemployment rate rose 2.0%, unemployment rates were up in 49 states and the District of Columbia and unchanged in one state, West Virginia. The national jobless rate is now 6.7%.

In November, nonfarm payroll employment rose in nine states and fell in 41 states plus the District of Columbia. The largest over-the-month gains in the level of employment were recorded in Washington — up 17,400 where some 27,000 aerospace workers ended their strike and returned to payrolls —  Texas, up 7,300; Oklahoma, up 3,000; and Alaska up 2,500.

The largest over-the-month decrease in the level of employment was recorded in Florida, down 58,600; followed by North Carolina, down 46,000; California, a drop of 41,700; Michigan, a decline of 36,900; and Georgia, down 30,000.
