Krolicki, Ex-Aide Indicted

A state grand jury Wednesday announced felony indictments against Nevada Lieut. Gov. Brian Krolicki for actions taken when he was the state treasurer, the Associated Press reported.

The indictments, which include four counts against Krolicki and two against his former chief of staff, Kathryn Besser, appear to grow out of a 2007 audit by the state’s Legislative Counsel Bureau. It found that money earned by the state government in the Nevada College Savings Program was not properly handled, resulting in improper contract approvals and expenditure levels higher than those authorized by the Legislature. The program is a tax-advantaged Section 529 savings program.

Krolicki faces two counts of misappropriation and falsification of accounts by a public officer, and two counts of misappropriation by a treasurer. Besser faces one count each of being a principal to misappropriation and falsification of accounts and being a principal to misappropriation by a treasurer.

Krolicki, a Republican, said in November that he was an indictment target, and that the entire process is the result of a partisan witch hunt by state Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat.
