Filling the Treasurer’s Seat

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius must appoint a new treasurer to replace Lynn Jenkins, who defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Nancy Boyda for the Second District congressional seat in the general election.

The Democratic governor is expected to appoint a fellow Democrat to replace the Republican Jenkins for the last two years of her four-year term, although Sebelius said she would consider any qualified candidate.

“I have no process in place,” the governor said at her weekly news conference. “I have no timetable.”

The treasurer manages the state’s investments, oversees its college savings plans and financial literacy programs, and is a member of the board that oversees public employee pensions.
