When lawmakers convene in January, Republicans will be in control of both chambers of the Legislature for the first time since Oklahoma became a state in 1908. In the wake of the Nov. 4 elections, the GOP enjoys a 26-22 advantage in the 48-member Senate and 61-40 edge in the 101-member House.
The Senate had been evenly divided, but the Republicans picked up two seats in last week’s elections. The GOP advantage in the House was 57-44 last year, but the party added four seats to their majority.
Sen. Glenn Coffee, R-Oklahoma City, was unanimously selected as president pro tem of the Senate by the Republican caucus last week. The formal election by the full Senate is set for Jan. 6, when the Legislature convenes.
