Lawmakers Slash $488M

South Carolina lawmakers ended their special legislative session Thursday after making $488 million in budget cuts, but they could be back at the capital if they don’t like what Gov. Mark Sanford does with the bill they passed.

The legislature was called in to deal with a deficit and cut spending mainly in state agencies, higher education, and conservation budgets. Sanford has indicated he may veto some portions of the bill. Lawmakers could return to override his vetoes.
