Gaming Bill Stays on Ballot

An industry-supported gaming measure will remain on next month’s ballot following a Cole County judge’s decision this week to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the question.

Opponents of the measure argued that it violated Missouri state rules limiting proposals to a single subject. Judge Richard Callahan ruled that the central purpose of the measure is the regulation of gaming and its revenues which complies with the single subject rule.

The measure promoted by gaming companies would eliminate the state-imposed $500 loss limit at casinos, cap the number of casinos in the state at 13, and raise gambling revenue taxes by 1% to 21%, with the extra funds going towards school funding. The lawsuit was filed by a state lawmaker and a Cape Girardeau businessman who are against the cap on casino licenses.
