A Blunt Refusal to Run

Gov. Matt Blunt announced last week that he would not run for re-election, saying that a second term likely would not prove as significant as his first.

Blunt said in published interviews that he felt he had accomplished the goals he set out when he took office and that he didn’t have the “same sense of mission for a second term.” The governor posted his announcement on the Web site YouTube.

The Republican governor, who was elected in 2004, had raised $10 million for a possible re-election bid, but had not previously announced his intentions. Blunt sought to cut government spending and privatize some services during his tenure.
