Sales Tax Forever

Pottawatomie County voters have approved a permanent extension of a 1% sales tax that was to have expired in January 2013. The tax extension was approved by an almost 2-to-1 margin, with 3,404 in favor and 1,650 opposed.

The tax currently generates $6.3 million a year for the county, which is located about 30 miles east of Oklahoma City.

Most of the revenue is earmarked for road and bridge projects, with 20% reserved for the county jail operations, 7% for county fire departments, 2% for senior citizen centers, and 2% for economic development.
