Texas collected $1.8 billion in sales tax revenue in July, up 10.4% from July 2007, Comptroller Susan Coombs said last week.
The state levies a 6.25% sales tax, and distributes any local sales taxes.
“The Texas economy remains strong,” Coombs said. “However, we continue to monitor the slower growth seen nationally.”
The state distributed $583.4 million in sales tax allocations to local governments this month, up 9.2% compared to August 2007. So far this calendar year, sales tax allocations to local governments are up 6.3% in the first seven months of calendar 2008 compared to last year.
Cities received $393.1 million in August, up 8% from 2007. Counties received $35.3 million, with $21.3 million in sales tax revenues allocated to 135 special taxing districts.
The 10 local transit systems in Texas received $133.5 million, up 9.9% from 2007.
