Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta was named the world’s busiest airport in 2007 by the Airports Council International.
According to the council, Hartsfield-Jackson had more than 89 million passengers, followed by Chicago O’Hare International Airport with 76 million. Next was London’s Heathrow International Airport, with 68 million passengers.
Hartsfield-Jackson is in the midst of a $6 billion capital improvement program to keep up with the growing traffic. Last month, officials for the airport released a report noting that much of its 10-year CIP has been completed.
The program has largely been funded with bonds issued by Atlanta and officials are eying more debt in the near future, said Hartsfield-Jackson general manager Ben DeCosta. An exact date has not been set.
The CIP includes funding for a fifth runway, a consolidated rental car facility, and an international terminal.
