Trans-State Port Project

Port authorities in Georgia and South Carolina will share ownership of the Jasper Ocean Terminal site located in South Carolina under plans set for approval next week.

The Georgia Ports Authority board of directors on Monday unanimously approved the acquisition of 1,518 acres of land for the development on the Savannah River. The South Carolina State Ports Authority board is set to consider a similar resolution.

No bonds will be issued for the property acquisition for the GPA’s half of the purchase, which will be made from internal funding, said Robert Morris, the director of external affairs.

A compact must be approved by each state’s General Assembly and the U.S. Congress.

Georgia’s deepwater ports and inland barge terminals support more than 286,476 jobs throughout the state annually and contribute $14.9 billion in income, $55.8 billion in revenue, and $2.8 billion in state and local taxes.
