Securities and Exchange Commissioner Elisse Walter was formally sworn in yesterday by SEC chairman Christopher Cox, about a two weeks after the Senate cleared her and two other nominees to serve on the five-member commission.
Walter, a Democrat, succeeds Annette Nazareth, who stepped down from the SEC in February. Previously, Walter was the senior executive vice president of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Before that, she worked for about 17 years on the SEC’s staff and had a hand in writing the municipal market’s secondary market disclosure rules.
Walter was confirmed by the Senate in late June along with fellow Democrat Luis Aguilar, an Atlanta-based corporate securities lawyer, as well as Troy Paredes, a Republican securities professor at Washington University in St. Louis.
Aguilar replaces Roel Campos, who left the commission last year, while Paredes will replace Paul Atkins, who said he would leave the SEC as soon as his successor was confirmed.
SEC sources said yesterday that Aguilar will likely start at the commission late this month or in early August, and that Paredes will start sometime in August.
