Trustees of Johnson County Unified School District 233 have set an election on Nov. 4 for a $68 million general obligation bond package that would finance expansions at four high schools.
The district serves the Kansas City suburb of Olathe.
The school expansion project will allow the district to move ninth graders from junior highs into the high schools and move sixth grade classes from elementary schools into the junior highs.
A survey of district residents by ETC Institute found that 64% of voters would support a $65 million bond package but only 46% would support a $75 million bond issue.
“The significant increase in the level of non-support for each progressive increase in the tax rate that was tested on the survey suggests that voters are very sensitive to tax rates at this time,” ETC said.
The district’s GO debt is rated Aa3 by Moody’s Investors Service and AA-minus by Standard & Poor’s.
