Factory Orders Rise 0.6%; Ex-Transportation Up 0.4%

New factory orders for manufactured goods jumped 0.6% in May, the Commerce Department said yesterday.

The factory order increase, to $448.680 billion, matched the 0.6% increase projected by IFR Markets and came after a revised 1.3% increase to $445.91 billion in April, originally reported as a 1.1% increase to $445.23 billion.

Excluding transportation, the level of all new manufacturing orders rose 0.4% to $391.4 billion in May, following a 2.8% rise in April to $390.1 billion, originally reported as a 2.6% jump to $389.2 billion. The increase compared to a 1.0% increase projected by IFR.

Excluding defense, new orders grew 0.3% to $436.2 billion, following a 1.4% increase to $434.8 billion in April.

New orders for durable goods were flat at $213.5 billion in May, while orders for non-durable goods jumped 1.2% to $235.1 billion in the month.
