SEC Confirms Three New Commissioners

The Senate easily confirmed three nominees to the Securities and Exchange Commission by voice vote on Friday, including Elisse Walter, who served on the SEC's staff from 1977 to 1994 and who had a hand in writing the municipal market's secondary market disclosure rules.

Walter, the senior executive vice president of the regulatory arm of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, was confirmed along with fellow Democrat Luis Aguilar, an Atlanta corporate securities lawyer, as well as Republican Troy Paredes, a securities professor at Washington University in St. Louis.

"The president and the Senate have given the SEC three outstanding commissioners," SEC chairman Christopher Cox said in a statement Friday. "I look forward to welcoming them to their important positions of leadership in the finest securities regulatory agency in the world.

Walter and Aguilar replace Annette Nazareth and Roel Campos, who have already left the commission. Paredes replaces Paul Atkins, who said he would leave the SEC as soon as his successor was confirmed.
