Palin Pushes $240M of GOs

Gov. Sarah Palin, in her state of the state address Tuesday, reiterated her support for a plan to request $240 million of general obligation bond authorization.

She said the bond request — for transportation projects and a crime lab — makes sense because voters will ultimately decide, she told lawmakers gathered to begin their 2008 session.

“It’s their money,” Palin said.

The Alaska budget is flush with revenue triggered by high oil prices, and lawmakers this week began the debate over how much to spend and how much to save.

They are supposed to do it faster this year. A 2006 state referendum reduced regular legislative sessions to 90 days from 121, and this is the first year in which the new deadline takes effect.
