Tax District Merger Sought

St. Landry Parish President Don Menard is asking for an Oct. 4 election to create a single road-taxing district in unincorporated areas of the parish and reallocate revenue from a waste-disposal tax to road projects. The parish council is expected to consider setting the election at its June 18 meeting.

Menard said combining the existing taxing districts into a single entity would generate about $2.6 million annually, with another $500,000 coming from the current solid-waste district’s 0.82% sales tax.

The road project fund would also be boosted by $1 million the parish receives annually from slot machines at the Evangeline Downs horse racing track.

Voters rejected a similar proposal in 2006 that called for a 25-year, 15-mill property tax. The current proposal would be financed by a 10-year, 10-mill property tax.
